Today marks the 12th anniversary of a landmark milestone for Real Madrid who secured their 32nd football league title. On 2 May 2012, the Whites mathematically clinched the title after beating Athletic Club at San Mamés (0-3) with two games still to play. The madridistas set themselves on course for victory in the first 20 minutes with goals from Higuaín and Özil. After the re-start, Cristiano Ronaldo rounded off the scoring.

This league crown will be remembered for some extraordinary statistics. Never before in the history of the championship had a team collected 100 points and the current record of 121 goals was set. The team also surpassed the previous best record for total wins (32) and away games won (16).

Real Madrid finished the 2011/12 campaign nine points clear of Barcelona. On an individual level, Cristiano Ronaldo was the team's top scorer with 46 goals. That side was coached by Jose Mourinho, who won the league in his fourth different country: Portugal, England, Italy and Spain.
